In summary, Provider email address is optional but recommended due to benefits listed below, but not enforced. End user emails are completely optional.
During sign up and account creation, we ask for a provider email address. However, we do not verify the email address and it does not have to be a working email address. In other words, the email address used to sign up for a provider account is optional.
However, providing a working email address can offer additional benefits such as the ability to receive certain notifications regarding device status (offline/online events, IP change, etc) and notices sent to operators/providers.
Also, during the “Add Friend” process, you can optionally enter the email address of your contact/friend.
If the email address is provided, your friend will automatically receive an email, containing the access key, directly from software running on your device. In case of a change in the connection parameters, the device will automatically email your friend to inform them about the change. An example would be if the Pod’s IP address changes over time.
You can opt-out and instead share the provided access key via other communication channels that you have already established with your friend such as Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc. In this case, if the device’s IP address changes, you have to share the new access key manually yourself.
